Angus castle on the market for first time in more than a century

One of Scotland’s finest A-Listed castles, set in the beautiful Angus countryside, has gone on the market for the first time in more than a century.

Surrounded by glorious gardens and parkland, the exquisite fortified castle of Careston, with a history stretching back to the 13th century, is built from a distinctive red sandstone and set in extensive policies and gardens.

It displays traditional features including crowstepped gables, castellated turrets and astragal windows, while the extraordinary interior houses many wonderful original period features, from intricately carved fireplace surrounds - the stonework is considered to be some of Scotland’s finest - to elaborate wood panelling.

The castle, just five miles from Brechin, is known particularly for its elaborate chimney pieces, and the one in the hall features an enriched cornice, and an overmantel with the Royal Arms of Scotland.

There are also particularly fine chimney-pieces in the dining-room, and the central and east bedrooms on the second floor.

Savills is marketing the sale of the substantial estate, which extends in total to about 1528 acres, and is ideally situated just 23 miles from Dundee and 46 miles from Aberdee n Airport.

The castle itself comes with six bedrooms and four reception rooms .

On the market in its entirety, offers over £11.3 million are being invited for the estate, while the castle can be bought on its own for nearly £3 million.

The wider estate comes with several other properties including cottages and a farm house.

Owned by the same family for close to 150 years, the estate can be bought as a whole or in lots which includes the estates cottages, farm and even 1.6 miles of prime salmon and sea trout fishing.

Also known as Caraldston Castle it was originally built in the 13th century and its name is thought to derive from Keraldus, dempster to the Earls of Angus at the start of the 1200s.

Dempste rs were officials of barony courts, who were in the employ of local lairds.

The current building dates to around 1582, with later additions, and was built by Sir Henry Lindsay, later Earl of Crawford . It was bought in 1871 by John Adamson, son of a Dundee whaling ship owner.
