‘In My Father’s Words’, directed by Dundee Rep’s artistic director Philip Howard, is coming to the end of its run at the Rep before heading off on a tour of the Scottish highlands.

This beautiful play about identity, nationality and language opened at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow last month and will have its final performance in Dundee on Saturday (July 12) before embarking on its highland tour.

This world premiere by writer and broadcaster Justin Young is part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme.

In the year that the Commonwealth Games come back to Scotland, the Rep presents a play which re-tells the Scottish emigrant story for our times.

In an old wooden house by the shore of Lake Ontario in Canada, Louis battles with his elderly father whose decline into dementia is gradually robbing him of the ability to speak.

Louis’ professional success as a university teacher of classics belies an emotional inarticulacy which matches his father Don’s inability to express himself in words. Don’s carer, Flora from Scottish decent and a good listener understands that the ‘nonsense’ which Don speaks is fragmented Gaelic, opening up an ocean of revelations and buried family history spanning the Atlantic.

It’s with fondness and compassion that Flora, played by Muireann Kelly, understands her failing elderly patient Don, (Angus Peter Campbell) and unravels the untold story of his Scottish heritage.

Please note that ‘In My Father’s Words’ contains short Gaelic passages which will be subtitled.

The Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme is a national celebration. Culture 2014 will showcase dance, theatre, music, visual arts, comedy and much more in the run up to and after the Commonwealth Games, with Festival 2014 transforming the host city at Games time.

The Cultural Programme is a partnership between the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, Glasgow Life and Creative Scotland through National Lottery Funding.
