Spirit of adventure captured in plays

THE story of Captain Scott’s ill-fated expedition and his aspiration to be the first to reach the South Pole provides the topical subject matter for the first of two specially commissioned plays which bring together Dundee Rep and Glasgow’s Oran More theatre.

Their series of A Play, a Peh and a Pint returns to Dundee at Discovery Point from Tuesday, February 7 to Saturday, February 11 at 8pm.

Playwright Oliver Emanuel’s Spirit of Adventure tells the story of Captain Scott and his crew of 64 men who set sail on the Terra Nova only to be defeated by the Norwegians.

Spirit of Adventure will be performed at Discovery Point coinciding with the centenary of the Terra Nova expedition.

Dundee Rep Ensemble member Robert Paterson directs colleague Kevin Lennon in this poignant one man production seen through the eyes of an unexpected crew member.

Tragedy strikes as the adventurers return to the Terra Nova on this well documented voyage.

Spirit of Adventure will be performed in Òran Mòr in Glasgow later next month before A Play, A Peh and A Pint returns to Dundee with Forfeit by Alan Wilkins (April 3 to 7) which will be performed in Encore bar+brasserie at the Rep before heading to Òran Mòr

Gill Pouter, Heritage and Museums Director said: “Dundee Heritage Trust was very pleased with the Rep’s enthusiastic response to working with us to help commemorate the centenary of the Terra Nova expedition, a story with significant Dundee connections.

“It is truly exciting that a new piece of writing has been specially commissioned about Captain Scott, whose story continues to fascinate and captivate people. There will also be an opportunity for a private viewing of the ‘Race to the Pole’ exhibition at Discovery Point before the performance.”
