The Monikie Hall in Angus has a number of great acts lined up for the coming months.
They start on Saturday, March 22 when popular singer Paula MacAskill will be in concert.
From the age of two she started picking out nursery rhymes on the piano. Her parents recognised her interest in music and she started lessons from the age of five.
She learned to play the accordion and while at school learned every instrument she could. She took cornet and tenor horn lessons, bagpipes, guitar, clarinet and saxophone and still plays piano and accordion.
Paula has appeared with a number of Irish artists on tours around the UK with the likes of Dominic Kirwan, Joe Dolan and Brendan Shine, to name but a few. She has also worked with the Baron Knights and The Fortunes and has released a number of CDs.
She is a popular entertainer in Ireland and Scotland where she tours regularly.
Look out too for a number of other big names coming to Monikie Hall.
These include Janey Kirk and Broken Wing on Saturday, April 19; John McNichol and his band on Friday, May 23 and Shawn Cuddy and his band on Friday, June 27.
The eldest of 11 children, Cuddy grew up in a house where country music was always playing. After leaving school, he worked as an attendant at Mountmellick Hospital. In 1981 he and sisters Elizabeth and Martina formed a country band. When his siblings quit, he continued as a solo artist. He financed his first single with a bank loan and found that ‘Little Nell’ gained sufficient airplay to become a number 1 on RTE’s country chart; he subsequently launched his professional career as an entertainer. Soon afterwards he formed his own band and began to play the country club and theatre circuit in the UK and Ireland. He has toured with Foster And Allen and was support act to Johnny Cash on a UK tour. He joined Harmac Records in 1992 and enjoyed considerable success with his recording of Jerry Hanlon’s ‘The Calling (Home)’. It would appear he has now established himself as one of the most popular Irish country singers.
