Rehearsals are well advanced for Tayside Symphony Orchestra’s next concert on Saturday, June 22 in the Reid Hall, Forfar.

For this ‘Grand Gala Concert’ the orchestra has chosen an appealing programme of very well-known musical items specially selected to mark the 20th anniversary of its existence.

The first half of the concert will feature Beethoven’s ‘Fidelio’ Overture and the ‘Scottish Fantasia’ by Bruch while Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 will be on offer after the interval.

Soloist in the Max Bruch work is Ben Norris from Perth. Ben is one of Scotland’s young leading string players. He began his studies at the RSAMD (junior department) before going on to the Royal College of Music in London.

Ben has performed widely in the U.K. as well as in France, Italy and Australia. He regularly appears as part of the Scottish Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and English National Opera.

Ron Walker, the TSO Conductor, said: “For obvious reasons this is a significant event for the orchestra. Our initial concert in June 1993 would have been a one-off had the players not wanted TSO to continue.

“Recently we had a very successful party in Fowlis Village Hall, where we now rehearse, to celebrate our two decades of existence with a selection of helpers, TSO Friends, sponsors and musicians attending.

“It was a memorable occasion and great that a number of players who performed in our very first concert were present and were rightly applauded for their long-term commitment.

“We’re pleased to be sharing the stage with Ben, a very charismatic and talented young musician who’s a delight to hear. I’m very much hoping our loyal Angus audience will come along in droves not only to enjoy this fantastic rising star but also to be present at this special birthday date for the orchestra.”

A bus will run from Montrose/Brechin to the Reid Hall: those interested should contact John Stevenson (Montrose 830250) as soon as possible. Tickets from the Toy Castle, Forfar; Hoggs, High Street, Montrose; any member of the TSO/TSO Committee or at the door. Doors opens 6.45 p.m., the concert begins at 7.30 p.m.
