THE Jake Cogan Band will be the guests at Montrose Folk Club next Tuesday evening in the Links Hotel, Montrose.
This will be the last night of the current season at the club. After a Summer break, the club will resume on Tuesday, August 14 when the guests will be a double bill of the Doghouse Roses from Glasgow, and also Katrina Juvencic and Dejan Lapanja from Slovenia.
Jake Cogan is one of the rising young stars of Scottish music. She is touring Scotland in June and July with her four-piece band, in order to showcase her new album entitled “Parcel of Rogues” which was released in May. The Jake Cogan Band are Jed Potts on guitar, Emily Peppers on fiddle, Iain Bruce, also on guitar and Craig Ainslie on double bass.
Parcel of Rogues is a collection of Burns songs delivered with characteristic soul and a refreshing transatlantic sound, embellished with rootsy Americana and Folk flavours. Parcel of Rogues was the Album of the Week on the Iain Anderson Show on BBC Radio Scotland during the week beginning May 7, 2012.
The repertoire of Jake Cogan also includes songs from the best contemporary songwriters including some from the pen of the acclaimed Boo Hewerdine.
Born in Lanark but now Edinburgh based, Jake comes from a huge family of Irish decent and is the youngest of a long line of musicians. She has been described as a potential successor to Karine Polwart.
The Edinburgh Festival Review described Jake as “one of Folk music’s new and exciting artists, with a beautiful mellifluous voice that seems to spring forth from the depths of a trance, like the rolling mist of Scottish Glens. Gorgeous, folkish music, with an alt-country feel.”
Everyone is welcome at Montrose Folk Club next Tuesday for what is certain to be a memorable end to the current season. Jake will be on stage at 8 pm with the doors at the Links Hotel open at 7.30pm.
