MONTROSE Folk Club will return to its normal sequence of fortnightly Tuesdays next week (November 1) when the guests in the Links Hotel, Montrose will be the Wendy Weatherby Band featuring Sandy Brechin.

The band consists of Wendy on cello and vocals, Steve Lawrence, formerly of Iron Horse, on guitar and various stringed instruments, Fiona Cuthill, of Rallion, on fiddle, and the flamboyant Sandy Brechin on accordion.

All are outstanding musicians in their own right; as a four-piece they form a powerhouse unit to perform the very best of modern and traditional Scottish music and song.

Since graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 1983, Wendy has taken her interest in jazz and folk music to concerts and festivals throughout the UK, Europe, the USA and the former Soviet Union. She has worked and recorded with many top Scottish musicians, including Michael Marra, the Pearl Fishers and Phil Cunningham, as well as having two solo albums to her credit. She works regularly in the theatre and in October was touring in a new production of Para Handy. Her previous work includes The Ship and The Big Picnic, produced by Bill Bryden, and the performances of Arthur and Tam O’Shanter by Wee Stories, for which she also composed the music. Wendy regularly features in the illustrated lectures by Dr Fred Freeman on Robert Burns. She is in demand as a singer and cellist at events worldwide.

Sandy Brechin is one of the top three accordionists presently playing in Scotland. He is a very exciting and extrovert performer, who has developed an instantly recognisable style, which has taken the accordion into new areas to appeal to a younger audience. Sandy was originally a member of Seelyhoo, but now plays with Burach and the Sensational Jimi Shandrix Experience, as well as The Sandy Brechin Band. Steve Lawrence and Fiona Cuthill are both members of Rallion as well as the Wendy Weatherby Band. The doors will open next Tuesday at 7.30 pm with the band on stage at 8 pm.
