Dallahan will be the guests of Montrose Folk Club at the Links Hotel, Montrose on Thursday, October 9.

Dallahan is an exciting new Edinburgh-based band of award winning musicians playing original and traditional Irish tunes and songs with inflections of American and Eastern European music.

They create a sound which is as much fun to listen to as it is for the band members to play.

The band features Ciaran Ryan, originally from Brechin, on banjo, fiddle and mandolin.

Ciaran is a young virtuoso on various stringed instruments. In 2006 he was the winner of the title of ‘All Britain Banjo Champion’ for his age group. When you hear him play, it is not hard to understand why.

The other members of the band are singer and guitarist Jack Badcock, Jani Lang on fiddle, Thomas O’Brian on accordion and Balazs Hermann on double bass.

The members of Dallahan met each other through local sessions in Edinburgh where they are established performers of various musical styles ranging from classical and jazz to Celtic and Balkan music.

Other band members have also won awards, including fiddler Jani Lang, who won first prize at the Hungarian Traditional Music Competition.

Singer and guitarist Jack Badcock was recently a finalist in the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award 2014.

As a band, Dallahan have recently received an ‘Emerging Excellence Award’ from ‘Help Musicians UK’.

The Herald, reviewing the gig by Dallahan at the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh in December 2013 in connection with the release of the first Dallahan EP, commented on the tight frontline of the band with Jani Lang, Thomas O’Brian and Ciaran Ryan celebrating the shape of a melody as strongly as Jack Badcock, on propulsive guitar, and double bassist, Balazs Hermann, focus on the rhythm.

The Herald also praised the imagination of the instrumental arrangements as well as the singing of Jack Badcock, “with his clear articulation, melodious phrasing and astute way of relating a narrative.”

Jack Badcock is a very fine singer of both contemporary and traditional songs.

Dallahan have recently recorded and released their debut CD, which is entitled ‘When the Day is on The Turn’.

The band raised the money to record and release the CD by the innovative method of a Crowdfunding campaign.

The success of this campaign was such that it allowed the band to proceed with the project so that the album could be launched in August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Dallahan have recently been in the USA to perform at the Milwaukee Irish Festival.

Everyone is welcome at Montrose Folk Club on Thursday, October 9 to hear exciting music and song provided by an outstanding young band. The doors at the Links Hotel will be open at 7.30 p.m. with Dallahan on stage at 8 p.m.
