Canadian duo Petunia and Nathan Godfrey will be the guests for the final concert of the 2014 season at Montrose Folk Club in the Links Hotel, Montrose at 8 p.m. on Friday, December 5.

Petunia is the singer and front man for the top Canadian band, Petunia and The Vipers, who made a triumphant UK debut at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow in 2013.

Since then, Petunia and The Vipers have toured the UK on two occasions. They have been wowing audiences everywhere and playing to big crowds.

Between band tours, Petunia himself in November and December 2014 is touring both Ireland and the UK, together with another stunningly talented musician, Nathan Godfrey, with whom he has toured extensively on the USA and Canadian circuit for many years in a duo format.

Petunia and Nathan will be playing acoustically and in a rootsier groove. Audiences can expect covers of Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Jimmie Rodgers and Jelly Roll Morton, as well as a strong collection of original songs written by Petunia.

Petunia accompanies his vocals on guitar. His multi-talented side-kick Nathan, who joins him on vocals and resonator guitar, mandolin or banjo, is recognised as one of the leading old-time performers in Canada, as well as hosting his own radio show.

The music of Petunia is infectious; his singing ranges from the most delicate to the most powerful, often within a single song, whether Hillbilly-flavour, swing or Ragtime-Goodtime.

With a piercing gaze, Petunia looks into the collective soul of the audience, then launches into some high and lonesome vocals which conjure up the ghosts of Jimmie Rodgers. He defies convention; his honest, cut to the heart song-writing and multi-syllabic narratives would leave a lesser singer tongue-tied and breathless.

Originally from rural Quebec, Petunia is now based in Vancouver. After spending the early part of his career playing on every major street corner, subway station and park bench in Canada and New York City picking, grinning and singing for his living, he has become a regular on the Canadian and USA touring circuit for many years now.
