It’s a mixed bag of releases this week but one film sure to attract a lot of attention will be ‘The Butler’ starring Forest Whitaker.

Set against the backdrop of some of the most momentous events of 20th century American history, the film focuses on the life of White House butler Cecil Gaines (Whitaker)

During his time working at the nerve centre of Government, Gaines served eight presidents spanning a period that included the rise of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

Worth a look for the superb ensemble cast alone, ‘The Butler’ features among others the not inconsiderable talents of John Cusak, Robin Williams, Alan Rickman, Oprah Winfrey and Jane Fonda.

Jude Law and Richard E Grant team up for crime drama ‘Don Hemingway’. Safe-cracker Hemingway (Law) is released from a 12-year stint in prison, and, along with partner Dickie (Grant), sets about collecting the money he is owed for not blabbing to protect his boss Mr Fontaine (Demian Bichir).

After an accident he becomes obsessed with trying to reacquaint himself with his daughter, but soon ends up reeled back into the underworld, determined to settle things.

Michael Fasbender’s star continues to rise in ‘The Counselor’, in which he plays a successful and manipulative lawyer who thinks he can play both sides of the law.

He soon finds, however, that he’s in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking. Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Javier Bardem also star.

Look out for more previews in next week’s edition.
