A former pupil of Charleston Nursery and Glamis Primary has been included in the Scottish Six Nations Squad for the current internationals.

Zander Fagerson, whose home is in Westmuir, continued his education at the High School of Dundee, and then after S4 on a rugby scholarship to Strathallan.

While at Dundee High, at Under-15 and Under-16 levels, he helped the school win the Brewin Dolphin Plate.

He was an Elite development player for a year then Pro from last June. He currently plays for Glagow Warriors.

The Glasgow Warriors website adds: “His impressive rugby credentials were further enhanced by selection for Caledonia at under-16 and under-18, while the powerful prop has also represented his country at the same age groups.

“He was part of the sides that played Ireland and England in early 2013, starting at tight-head in both matches, and represented Glasgow Hawks in the Premership during the 2013/14 season.”

Zander represented Caledonia and Scotland at under-16, Scotland (2013 and 2014) and Glasgow at under-18 and played for the one-off Scotland under-19 side that met Australia Schools at Myreside in December 2013.

He was called up to the Scotland under-20 squad for the 2014 IRB Junior World Cup, starting against New Zealand in the pool stages. Fagerson scored his first points for Scotland under-20, as he crossed the whitewash in his side’s 36-34 win over Wales, in the 2015 Six Nations Championship.

Scottish team coach Vern Cotter said: “Zander has done exceptionally well for a 20-year-old prop. He has proved that he has that competitive desire to do well.”

He added that Zander and fellow debutant Rory Sutherland will have time on the field at some point.

Zander celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday of last week. He is 6ft 2in tall, and weighs 18 stones.

Outside of rugby Zander won the 2010 Scottish Downhill Mountain Bike Championship, was a member of the Scottish National Boys’ Choir in 2008, and is a qualified lifeguard.

Scotland’s fixtures are: February 6, at home to England; February 13, away to Wales; February 27, away to Italy; March 13, at home to France; March 19, away to Ireland.
