Teams get ready for the Special Olympics 2011

LOCAL athletes are preparing to join their fellow competitors in Athens for this years Special Olympics World Summer Games.

The event is the largest multi-sports event in the world this year with 185 nations and a total of 7,500 athletes taking part.

Taking place in Athens, Greece from June 25 to July 4 the British delegation of 157 athletes and 88 volunteer coaches will include 18 from Tayside with a number coming from the Forfar and Kirriemuir area. Jamie Black, Forfar and Martin Cassidy, Kirriemuir will both take part in the bowling events. Also from the area are coaches Laura Baxter, Evelyn Smith and Assistant Head of Delegation Laura Smith.

The athletes recently joined up with their fellow countrymen and women in the small town of Runcorn for a weekend of training and camaraderie before their departure for Athens.
