Win for Muskies junior men

The MUSKETEERS junior men travelled to Linwood SC last Saturday to face last year’s league winners St Mirren.

With captain and playmaker Nicky Sim recovering from a virus the team knew that every other player would have to pick up their performances.

The Musketeers did not get off to a good start with St Mirren in great shooting form from the perimeter. The visitors rebounded well though with forwards Kevin and Mark Myers scoring at will and guard Jeb Spink also showing his shooting range edging the Musketeers into an 18 to 22 first quarter lead.

The second quarter saw a step up with another three-pointer from Spink. A run of 11 points by forward Mark Myers, followed by a series of baskets from Cameron Harris pushed the Musketeers out in front. The Muskies upped their defence to stifle the Saints offense and limited them to nine points in the quarter. The half ended 27 to 53 to the Musketeers.

The third quarter saw guard Sim muster his energy scoring eight points, hitting consecutive three pointers and finishing with six assists and four rebounds. The big bonus of the quarter was seeing the depth of the Muskies squad with Matty Skyner controlling the offense and forwards Craig Knight and Gavin Thomson sharing the ball and finding openings in the St Mirren zone defence. The third quarter ended 46-79.

The fourth quarter saw all Muskie players get key minutes with the inclusion of two year juniors Rory Anton at the guard spot and Robert Stewart at forward. Cameron Harris finished the game with a lay-up to round up the score to St Mirren 60, Musketeers 101.

The next game will be a long road trip to Ayrshire Tornadoes on Sunday, December 9.
