Sandy Mitchell from Letham has kick-started his single-seater racing career in style with victory on the UK’s fastest circuit.
This will be a race weekend he will never forget after bagging a double pole, two overall race wins in races one and three, and a second place finish in the reverse grid of race two.
He also set the new lap record for the MSA Formula Class and took the top step on the rookie class podium for all three races.
The High School of Dundee pupil, who is the reigning British Junior Max Karting Champion and the youngest British racer in the MSA Formula Championship, had a string of bad luck in the opening two events at Brands Hatch and Donington but after this event at Thruxton in Hampshire Sandy now jumps up to fifth position in the overall standings, and second in the rookie cup.
The MSA Formula Championship showcases alongside the British Touring Cars on ITV4.
In race three on the Sunday, just as he did in race one on the Saturday, 15-year-old Sandy Mitchell showed his MSA Formula rivals the way around the Thruxton circuit, leading for nearly the whole of the live-televised finale to claim the second victory of his car-racing career.
With the ITV4 camera firmly attached to his 135mph Ford Eco-boost car the viewers were treated to a high speed lap from the young drivers view.
Sandy said: “I came to Thruxton knowing that I had the speed and just hoping that I could turn that into some results, and now I have.
“It’s never easy leading a race, you always have to have maximum focus the whole time, but everything went well and I can’t wait for the next race now.
“Everything has gone really well with the car this weekend, the TRS Arden Junior Team have done a fantastic job, big thanks to all who have supported me and sponsors Stirfresh, SGM Distribution and Tunnocks.”
Sandy’s next race is at Oulton Park next month.
