Kirriemuir woman Louise Helyer will be looking to go one better and secure gold this time after she was selected for the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Largs next month.

Louise, 29, was part of the Scotland team that won Silver in the 2012 Championships in Australia four years ago, losing out to the host nation in the final, and she is hoping to make it another home win on this occasion.

The Strathallan Academy PE teacher was selected for the epee team after taking two years out of competitive fencing to focus on work commitments, but returned to active competition in 2013.

It was through the 2013 ranking competitions that Louise forced her way into the British top 15, finishing as the top Brit in the Copenhagen international as well as performing excellently in six domestic competitions.

Helyer, a former professional modern pentathlete, was delighted to receive the news.

She said: “It’s really good to be selected. I hadn’t been competitively fencing for two years because I’ve been concentrating on work so I decided last year to start competing again, so I was really excited to be selected again. It was a winter of lots of hard work and travelling south for various competitions.

“I went to Australia four years ago and won silver on the team event so I’m really hoping to win a medal again this time, or even go one better. We lost in the final to Australia lost time so we’d love to win this time, especially with it being a home competition.”

Louise is one of five women selected for the Scottish epee team - with five ladies on both the sabre and foil teams as well - but said she finds training slightly difficult because all of her teammates are based south of the border.

She added: “I’m training in Edinburgh at the minute twice a week and doing training weekends. It’s quite difficult being up in Scotland because all the other members of the team are based in England, so it’s hard to find the right level of fencers to train with.”

The Commonwealth Fencing Championships take place in Largs from Monday, November 10 to November 15.
