Sad times as top local club goes into abeyance

LOCAL junior football club Forfar West End has gone into abeyance.

The club, with a history that goes back to 1892, has been struggling to field a team of late, and has announced it is to sit out the remainder of the current season – with a plan to return to action next season, albeit in the East North League.

The decision was made last week, following a troubled few weeks, which resulted in the postponement of the recent East Super League match at Kelty Hearts.

West End managed to fulfil their latest fixture at home to Bankfoot in the opening round of the GA Engineering Cup a week past Saturday, and had been due back in league action on Saturday past.

However, as they could not be sure of squad numbers going forward it was decided last midweek that the best course of action would be to go into abeyance in the hope the club can return again next season – at the lower level.

The position West End currently finds itself in is a blow to junior football at a local level, for the Strathmore Park side have been riding high in recent seasons.

They have been one of the top sides in Tayside, competing with a fair degree of success in the East Super League, and can add a recent DJ League Cup success to their name.

For the remainder of the current campaign, the East Super League will run with only 11 teams, relegating one instead of two at the end of the campaign.

Commenting on West End’s position, an East Region spokesperson said: “West End have been one of the prominent teams in the region over the years and recently had won the DJ Laing League Cup. Hopefully they, along with Scone Thistle, who are also in abeyance, can come back next season, but finances are all very tight at the moment.
