THERE has been a feast of festive football over the Christmas period and we still have much to look forward to as we head into 2013, writes Sarah McLean.

On Boxing Day two Angus teams were in action in the final derby of 2012 when Brechin City defeated Arbroath 3-2 at Glebe Park. Brechin got off to the best start possible when a Stuart Malcolm own goal gave them the lead eight minutes in. Paul McLean doubled the lead just after the half hour mark. It was an Alan Trouten goal that sealed the deal though.

While Arbroath had two goals from Paul Sheerin and Steven Doris it wasn’t enough and Brechin took all three points.

Saturday saw all four teams back in action and victories all round for the Angus Clubs.

Arbroath took away three points with a 2-1 win over Albion Rovers, Brechin City, on an away day to Stranraer brought home a 2-1 victory, Forfar Athletic made it 3-2 against East Fife and Montrose made it 3-2 against bottom-of-the-table Stirling Albion.

It is as close as ever in the SFL Second Division now with Forfar leading the Angus teams in the third place spot with 26 points. Brechin City follow close behind with 25 while Arbroath bring up the rear in fifth with 23.There will be a lot of catching up to do for all three teams, however, if they want to better league leaders Queen of the South who have 44 points. Alloa Athletic are following, not a million miles behind, with 33.

In the SFL Third Division, Montrose have had a great season so far as they sit in the third play-off position - just a point behind Queen’s Park who have 27. Rangers are leading the way, as expected, with 42 points.

The first fixtures of the new year will see Montrose host Berwick Rangers at Links Park on Wednesday, January 2. On the same day there will be more derby action as Forfar Athletic host Brechin City at Station Park. Meanwhile Arbroath will host East Fife at Gayfield.

On Saturday, January 5 Brechin will be the only Second Division Angus side at home when they welcome Alloa Athletic. Arbroath and Forfar Athletic are away to Queen of the South and Stenhousemuir respectively. Montrose will be away to Peterhead.
