Angus Council Sports Development Team hosted the Fun in Athletics - Angus Final in partnership with Angus Active Schools at Lochside Leisure Centre in Forfar on Wednesday, December 5.

The Fun in Athletics - Angus Final brought this Angus wide programme to a close after six festivals had been held across the county, designed to give children an introduction to athletics through lots of fun track and field events in a team-based environment.

The programme has seen teams of up to 15 boys and 15 girls in primaries six and seven from schools across the county take part in relay races, javelin, speed bounce, standing long jump, standing triple jump and vertical jump events.

Birkhill PS, Monifieth, Whitehills PS, Forfar, Timmergreens PS, Arbroath, Monikie PS, Carnoustie, and Warddykes PS, Arbroath, participated in the final but unfortunately Lochside PS, Montrose, could not attend at the last minute due to the wintery weather conditions.

Warddykes PS won the event with Whitehills PS finishing second. Both teams will now represent Angus at the Tayside & Fife Regional event in April 2013 against teams from Dundee, Perth and Fife.

Councillor Jeanette Gaul, vice convenor of neighbourhood services, said: “It’s been great to see around 840 boys and girls take part in this programme and have a fun introduction to athletics.

“We really hope the children have enjoyed the events and get along to their local athletics clubs to keep going in the sport and wish good luck to our schools in the Tayside and Fife event next year.”
