Manager Campbell’s warning

After missing out on promotion in the play-offs, Campbell has managed to retain a nucleus of last season’s squad with Rab Douglas, Mark Baxter, James Dale, Michael Dunlop, Martyn Fotheringham, Gavin Malin and Chris Templeman all agreeing contract extensions.

Two new signings have also been made with 23-year-old central defender Tom O’Brien joining from Cowdenbeath, while 27-year-old midfielder Bryan Hodge has been snapped up from League One rivals Stenhousemuir.

However, Campbell is still waiting for Danny Denholm and Stephen Husband to commit their futures to the club, and he admitted that his patience is starting to wear thin.

“The contract offers will be off the table shortly,” he warned.

“If players want to go somewhere else, that’s fine, but I don’t think they’ll find a better part-time club in Scotland.

“That’s why very few players ever want to leave here.

“I never get flustered at this time of year. If players want to leave, we’ll replace them.”

Campbell is also waiting to hear back from veteran defender Darren Dods, but the 41-year-old is believed to be in the running for the managerial vacancy at

One player certain to leave Station Park is experienced defender Stuart Malcolm, who has accepted the offer of a player-coach role at Stenhousemuir.

“Stuart’s decision didn’t surprise me,” Campbell said.

“He’s 36 on his birthday so it’s a good move for him and he leaves with my best wishes.

“It gives an opportunity for younger players like Travis and Dunlop to stake a claim.”

Campbell is happy with the way his squad is shaping up thus far, and is hopeful of adding “one or two” more fresh faces next week.

“I’ve got two or three irons in the fire but players coming into the club have to be as good, if not better than what we already have,” he said.

“We were in the top two in the league for 33 out of 36 weeks last season so there’s not a lot needing sorted.

“At the moment we’ve got 16 players plus young boys, and we’re looking at one or two more, but I can only play 11 so they’re going to have to fight for places next season.”
