Forfar Athletic favourite Martyn Fotheringham always hoped he’d make it to a testimonial year with the Loons.

So the 33-year-old was rightly elated when he agreed a new contract with the Station Park club earlier this month.

Manager Gary Bollan offered the midfielder a new deal as the gaffer looks to build a squad capable of an immediate return to League One.

And a thrilled Fotheringham believes the playing pool is already looking in great shape after Bollan returned to his old haunt Airdrieonians to recruit Jim Lister, David Cox and Jamie Bain.

Martyn said: “I never thought I’d get a testimonial year in my career, if I’m being honest. It’s not something you see all the time now.

“I did decide when I went to Forfar, I’ve said on many occasions, there isn’t a better part-time team.

“I know what it’s like elsewhere so I’ve said I’d love to finish my career here.

“But that’s down to management and if the manager ever decided he didn’t want me here, that theory’s out of the window.

“At any stage I’ve never thought I’d be there for 10 years but I’ve always wanted it to be the case.

“I’m happy to be given something back for all those years I’ve been with the club.

“I think at 33-years-old if you’re getting dumped on the scrapheap after nine years with the club, you’d be wondering if anyone would take a chance on you.

“It’s good to have it sorted for another year now I can concentrate on helping the club try and get back up.

“I think the boys signed are different class, they’re League One players and we’re getting them into League Two. I think they’re probably Airdrie’s three best players.”
