FORFAR Athletic look to be in great shape for the start of the new campaign - with manager Dick Campbell continuing to add to his squad.

At the time of going to press on Tuesday (yesterday), the Loons had signed 19-year-old defender Mick Dunlop to the squad, with hopes high that wide right midfielder Omar Kadir will also join up by the end of this week.

That will take the squad to 18 players. The new faces who have already penned deals are goalkeepers Derek Soutar and David Scott, midfielder Keith Gibson and forwards Charlie King and Gavin Swankie.

Mick Dunlop agreed a one-year contract on Saturday past, having been a regular in the Loons’ pre-season friendly line-up to date.

The six foot two inch tall Fife based youngster was released by Aberdeen at the end of last season. Omar Kadir is under contract to his club Spartans until the end of August, but Forfar are hopeful of coming to an arrangement with the Edinburgh side that will allow the 26-year-old to sign up at Station Park in time to face Dunfernline Athletic. If nothing can be sorted out Kadir can play as one of two trialists in the opening round of the Ramsdens Cup.

Looking forward to the joust with the Pars, a team that was playing premier league football last season, the Loons can not be in better nick.

In five pre-season friendlies to date Dick Campbell’s troops have scored 21 goals and conceded just the four.

They kicked-off with a three-nil victory at Montrose, defeated Cove Rangers seven-two, got the better of Preston Athletic by five goals to two, defeated Heriot Watt University two-nil and thumped Highland League side Huntly four-nil.

There have been impressive displays all over the park, with new striker Gavin Swankie hitting four goals in the opening four games.

But the competition will get much tougher in the weeks ahead, with Dunfermline Athletic and Partick Thistle providing a stern early-season test in cup competition.

The opening league fixture of season 2012-2013 sees Forfar Athletic make the long trip south to take on Queen of the South on Saturday, August 11.
