Forfar to enter side in new U20 division

Forfar Athletic this week announced they would be entering a side into the new second tier of the SPFL Under 20 Development League.

Club officials took the decision because the league represents the only opportunity for the Loons to give their promising youngsters guaranteed game time in competitive football, given the current absence of the Under 19 League from SPFL plans.

Matches will be played on Monday or Tuesday evenings, with Forfar home games taking place on the latter.

Currently there is no guarantee that there will be sufficient clubs entering the league to allow it to be regionalised.

With three of last season’s Under 19 squad in Liam Keillor, Paul McLennan and Craig Smith receiving professional contracts, the majority of that team will make up the pool of players for this new side.

First team fringe players will also be able to feature on a match by match basis because five of the 18 players listed for each fixture can be an over age player. There will be no Angus derbies for the Forfar team though, with the county’s other three senior sides opting not to join the new structure.
