Forfar West End player-manager Daryl McKenzie was thrilled to see his side return to winning ways with a 2-0 win at Broughty Athletic.

Goals from John Farquharson and Scott Fullerton lifted West End into fourth in the East Region Premier League.

And coming after two defeats, Daryl was delighted with his side’s character.

He said: “It was a great win on Saturday, the boys bounced back really, really well. They showed a lot of personal qualities and that was very pleasing for the management team to see.

“Having performed so poorly at Dundee Violet, and on the back of losing to Kelty, it was a really important game for us having lost two on the trot.

“Not only because it was a local Dundee team but because if you lose three on the trot, all of a sudden the nature of the attitudes becomes quite low. But the boys responded fantastically well.”

Changes in personnel and formation were key to the visitors’ victory and McKenzie said it was proof of the strength running through his squad - with the gaffer himself returning to the starting 11 in a back three.

He continued: “We changed the formation, we changed a few other things, we brought a couple of boys back into the team - Darren Scott came back into the team, I started - and I thought we were worthy winners.

“We played very well, we created a lot of chances, Graeme Hart missed a couple of one-on-ones with the goalie which is unlike him, and we hit the woodwork.

“They never really got in behind us which was great to see from a defensive point of view, and we restricted them to shots from long range.

“We’ve got a great squad this year, we had four really good players on the bench on Saturday who were rightly disappointed not to be starting the game. It’s great to be able to bring someone like Darren Scott back into your team. That really helped Graeme up front, it gave him somebody to link to. And I put myself back into defence to give us that little bit of experience, to shore things up with an extra body in there, and that seemed to work really well.

“It was great to get the clean sheet. We’ve got goals in the team, we’ve always said that and I think we’re the highest scorers in the league. But it’s keeping the goals out.”
