Baxter hoping for derby victory

Mark Baxter believes a good win in this Saturday’s Petrofac Training Cup derby with Montrose can set the Loons up for the rest of the season.

Baxter was speaking after Forfar Athletic beat Berwick Rangers 2-0 in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the competitive opener.

The experienced full back admitted the side’s results and performances in pre-season have been a bit inconsistent, but added that it’s fitness that is the the key and, in that department, the players are doing very well.

Baxter said: “Pre season’s been good but I think we’ve been sporadic with the way we’ve performed, we’ve been good for spells then bad so it’s been quite indifferent in the games but fitness wise, the boys have had a good pre-season.

“To start I think the game was a bit frantic, but once we weathered the storm we were on top. They’re not a bad ”All in all I think we actually merited the win but it’s a pre-season friendly and hopefully we can strive on now.

“Montrose next weekend, that’s what the big one is, if we can win that then that can set us up for the season.”

Mark praised the side’s new signings for how swiftly they’ve settled into the way of things at Station Park, adding that they had no choice to do with him on their case.

He also spoke highly of youngsters like Kerr Hay, Michael Kennedy, Jason King, James Yates and Cameron Clark who all recently sign professional terms with the club.

Baxter continued: “The new boys are fitting in well, they have to learn quick if I’m on their case. It’s a hard school but even the young boys are doing well too, that’s why they’ve all got their first pro contract so hopefully they stand up to the plate when asked.

“I hope I can put my injury problems behind me.

“It was a long season last season because I went from playing the whole of one season to being in and out but hopefully I can keep playing and don’t struggle.”
