WHAT a great weekend...for two Angus clubs at least (writes Sarah McLean).
Forfar Athletic had the best win of the weekend with a 4-0 victory over recently promoted Stranraer. Goals came from Gavin Swankie, Danny Denholm and Martyn Fotheringham with an own goal from Mark Staunton. Sitting fifth in the table with new signings Swankie and Denholm proving very successful so far things are looking good for the Loons already.
Arbroath defeated Ayr United 4-2 at Gayfield on Saturday with goals coming from Derek Holmes, Brian Kerr, Darren Grubben and Daniel Rennie for the home side. Ayr United managed to pull two back courtesy of David Sinclair and an own goal from Arbroath’s Holmes.
Although Montrose got off to a good start against Queen’s Park at Hampden on Saturday with goals from Lloyd Young and Scott Johnston it all went wrong in the last five minutes when the home side pulled back a 2-2 draw.
Montrose suffered a blow earlier in the week when star striker Martin Boyle signed for SPL outfit Dundee FC. Boyle, who was last year’s Ginger Boot winner, will be much missed from the squad.
Brechin City fared the worst of the weekend when they lost out 3-1 away to Stenhousemuir. The sole Brechin goal came from Andrew Jackson just after the 50 minute mark to bring the scores level but Stenhousemuir were quick to take another two goals to secure the win.
The weekend also held one of Tayside’s most anticipated fixtures - the Dundee Derby. After complete Old Firm saturation over the past few years (for example, seven meetings in one season!) it was a refreshing change.
Although the result didn’t go Dundee’s way, Dundee United fans will be happy with their 3-0 result.
Elsewhere in Scottish football, records were broken with a sell-out attendance at Ibrox on Saturday when 49,118 Rangers fans filled the ground - more than the combined total of all SFL and SPL games played that day.
Makes you think, really, doesn’t it?
