A five minute hat-trick from Abbi Grant was the highlight of Forfar Farmington’s victory in Aberdeenshire at the weekend.
Signalling Forfar’s intentions from the off in the Scottish Women’s Premier League, Alana Bruce drove inside and fired a shot that hit the wrong side of Sam McQuillian’s right hand post.
Cheryl Rigden then chipped a cut back just off target and Caroline Heron forced the Buchan goalkeeper into a low save as the opening ten minutes saw the visitors seek an opener.
On the 20 minute mark Hannah Stewart drilled a venomous strike at Leonie Simpson, the Farmington keeper doing well to hold the ball first time of asking before Farmington opened the scoring in the 22nd minute.
A terrific ball from Bruce found Abbi Grant who hit the touch line before cutting the ball back to Caren Webster who knocked the ball home under pressure.
Two minutes later Bruce produced another excellent delivery, this time to Heron who expertly lobbed the ball over McQuillian for a fine finish.
Heron nearly doubled her haul immediately when a booming clearance from Simpson found the Farmington number 12, McQuillian forced into making a fine low save.
Both Godfrey and Rigden came close on the half hour mark, while Stewart continued to threaten for the hosts.
Five minutes from half time Rigden’s fast feet gave her the opportunity to fire another shot at the Buchan goal, the ball drifting just high and wide.
Godfrey blasted over from 12 yards and Heron struck the woodwork twice after some good work from Nicky Grant as the match reached half time.
Six minutes into the second half, Buchan fired a free kick over Simpson’s bar after a foul on Stewart, and McQuillian was called into action to palm clear a Webster cut-back as both teams traded opening attacks, but a five minute spell secured the full points for Mark Nisbet’s side.
Abbi Grant successfully stole a yard on her marker before producing a well taken finish.
Two minutes later Fay McDonald found Grant who duly lashed the ball past McQuillian. Grant then secured her hat trick when Heron released the Montrose kid on goal, the Scotland U-19 international calmly rounding McQuillian to roll the ball home.
Buchan pulled a goal back with quarter of an hour remaining when Stewart converted from the spot but Farmington restored the gap when a long ball found the speedy Heron for a composed finish.
