"PROMISING signs but still a bit of work to do, on and off the park."
That's how Forfar Athletic's most recently appointed director David Brash sums up the open salvos of the 2008-2009 campaign - a period that has seen Forfar flourish away from home so far, but still to shine on home soil.
Speaking after the one-nil reverse to Cowdenbeath at Station Park on Saturday, Mr Brash, who hails from Auchterarder, said he was both excited and privileged to have been invited to become the seventh member of the Forfar Athletic board of directors.
Born in Edinburgh, but having worked down south, mostly in the Surrey area, for most of his career, Mr Brash is now a semi-retired freelance accountant.
"I have always had a passion for football, and, up until last season, was a season-ticket holder at Hearts" he commented.
"It has always been an ambition of mine to get involved with a local club and, last season, I made approaches to one or two.
"I met up with the Forfar directors towards the end of last season, and they provided me with the opportunity to become involved."
Mr Brash is keen to bring his accountancy skills and fresh ideas to a club keen to bounce back as a force after a couple of seasons in the doldrums.
"My background is slightly different to that of other board members," he explained. "I am a little bit more technically minded - IT, website, and the like - and the directors were happy to have someone involved who could help promote the club in that sphere and work with the volunteers in those areas.
"Also, because of my accountancy background, I have been able to assist in other areas.
"The first thing I did was get the club's share scheme Enterprise Investment Relief approved, which means people who buy shares in the club could get tax relief provided they meet certain criteria. That was something I engineered because of my background and experience in that field."
The new director is keen to play a lead role in securing the long-term financial future of the club.
"I am a believer that clubs at this level should ideally be self-sufficient from a financial point of view.
"One of our objectives is to try and get the club running on an even-footing. This is going to take a bit of work, but we have ideas to try and bring in a little bit more in the way of sponsorship revenue and reduce the overdraft.
"It's difficult, but you only need one big cup game and things could all change overnight."
On the field, the immediate aim is to continue to progress, after finishing stone bottom of the Scottish third division in season 2007-2008.
Saturday past's result apart, Mr Brash feels things are gradually clicking into place.
"Saturday's result was a bit of a disappointment for everybody at the club, but hopefully people will have seen that, with the new manager in place and a little bit more money available, things are looking a bit more promising.
"Having watched SPL football for years, this type of football is new to me and it's hard to gauge where we are at present, but things are certainly looking a lot better than they were at this time last season.
"We look as though we are putting together a team that gets results and entertains the fans. We didn't seem to get going on Saturday, which was frustrating, because, if you put on a good performance early season, more people will be encouraged to come out and watch.
"But, it has been a difficult week for a number of reasons, and next Saturday is another day."
Mr Brash doesn't have to worry about how his wife can pass away her Saturday while he is at Station Park, for she is every bit an avid soccer fan as he is.
"Nicky loves football. She has also been a season-ticket holder at Hearts, and is probably more knowledgeable than me.
"And, my son James, who is 20, is about to get his UEFA B licence as a football coach. He is currently over in Northern Ireland with Glentoran, helping to run one of the club's youth academy teams."
