THE increasing struggle to field cricket teams was evident once again at the weekend when a Strathie first team match failed to go ahead because Cupar were unable to cobble together a side.
There have been occasions when teams have been unable to raise second elevens, but it becomes a much greater cause for concern when a club cannot put together a first team for a league encounter.

Cupar conceding the 25 points meant a blank Saturday for the Lochside club, as no second team match was on the calendar.

Indeed, had it not been for the resurrection of the Factory Cup six-a-side cricket tourney staged on Sunday the area would have been starved of the sport over the weekend altogether.

As it transpired Strathie players led teams in a round-robin competition staged in two sections throughout Sunday afternoon.

Section one comprised the Rugby Club, Six on the Beach, The 6 Packs and Totally Stumped while, in section two, were Dad's Army, Iron Maidens and Slice Hunters.

The Rugby Club cruised through to the final in section one, and went on to defeat the section two winners, Slice Hunters, to emerge as Factory Cup winners for 2008.

Fingers will be crossed that normal cricketing service resumes this coming week.
