FORFAR Athletic's quest for a third division revival next season has become a bit clearer with the news that the new team joining the third division, and indeed senior league football, is Annan Athletic.
The side from Annan, in Dumfries and Galloway, will replace Gretna after beating off the challenge of three East of Scotland League rivals, plus Highland League champions Cove Rangers.

Annan were understood to have won the backing of all eight representatives voting from the SFL who toured the facilities on offer from the five applicants.

It was felt that Annan's present facilities were the most capable of meeting the criteria and they can now look forward to joining up with the Loons and the other division three teams.

With this news, a significant new geographical marker has been added to the fixture trail, with the Loons having to embark on a round trip of around 340 miles on two separate occasions in the season ahead.

The first trip to Annan takes place on Saturday, September 20, with Dick Campbell taking his troops for a second time on Saturday, February 21.

Significantly, the first away fixture against the newcomers comes only a week after a tough derby game against Montrose, albeit one that is at Station Park.

Forfar's home fixtures against the side formerly known as Club X, will take place on Saturday, December 6 and Saturday, April 18.

Annan Athletic were formed in 1942 and have had their taste of senior league football over the years by competing in the Scottish Cup, in which they once played Forfar's near-neighbours Brechin City.

The club's pinnacle of success came in 2006-07 when both the Tennent's Qualifying Cup (South) and the Tyreman East of Scotland Premier League title were won.

The club appears to have certainly enjoyed some recent success. Forfar Athletic will be hoping any further success for Annan does not impinge on their efforts for the upcoming season.
