TALENTED Forfar Academy musicans gathered in the Lowson Memorial Church recently to compete for two awards.
The Forfar Academy Young Musician of the Year competitions, now in their 11th year, were closely contested at junior and senior level.

The pupils were competing for the Ebern Cup (junior pupils) and the William D. Bernard Trophy (pupils in fourth to sixth year).

Both competitions were adjudicated by Miss Beth Wyllie, who offered words of encouragement and praise, not only for the soloists, but for all the performers who participated during the evening.

The winner of the Ebern Cup (gifted through donations by the Academy's partner school in Germany) was pianist Michael Rose, with singers Kirstie Curran and Zoe Innes second and third respectively.

The William Bernard Trophy (presented by the congregation of the East & Old Parish Church in recognition of Willie Bernard's 60-plus years of service to the church and the community of Forfar) was won by piper Russell Walker, with flautist Ellen Henry second and guitarist Aran Ward Sell third.

Afterwards, an almost full church - with guests including Depute Provost Peter Murphy and members for Angus Council's education department joining parents, pupils and staff in the audience - was treated to a concert by Academy pupils, the programme including items from the concert band, recorder group, soloists, the school's five choirs and the flagship samba band.
