A FORMER Forfar Academy Dux pupil, who went on to follow a career in education, has died at the age of 87.
Miss Margaret Hardie was born and brought up in Forfar.

The award of the Dux medal at Forfar Academy in 1938 led to entering a bursary competition to attend St. Andrews University and she was awarded the first place to attend the campus.

After
four years studying English and history, Miss Hardie achieved a first-class honours MA Degree.

She then took a teacher-training course and went on to Edinburgh as a high school teacher for six years.

At the age of 29, Miss Hardie obtained a post as a lecturer in English at Dundee College of Education, remaining in the post until her retiral at the age of 60.

During retirement, Miss Hardie improved her ability in French and German and took up studies in Chinese, Russian and Gaelic.

A keen interest in history was also one of Miss Hardie's pursuits and she attended seminars at the Meffan institute.

She spent many years running the Forfar Literary Institute from the 1970s to the 1990s and was awarded a certificate of long service.

Through the Literary Institute she was heavily involved in organising the Burns Festival and setting up appropriate individuals to judge at such an event.
