CHEQUES IN HONOUR OF WELL-KNOWN KIRRIE MAN
THE family of a well-known Kirriemuir man, who lost his battle with cancer early this year, have honoured his memory by raising a four-fugure sum for two good causes.
Raymond Reid, a blacksmith to trade, died in January at the age of 62, having initially been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma 14 years ago.
A collection taken at Raymond's well-attended funeral, together with a donation from the Motor Caravanners Club and money collected by relatives Peter and Linda Book on the occasion of 60th birthday and ruby wedding anniversaries resulted in £1,000 being gathered.
And, just the other week, in the village of Westmuir, three of Raymond's grandchildren, Rachel Critch, Robert Critch and Reece Fleming, presented cheques for £500 each to Angus Cancer Care and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Born in Banffshire, Ray moved to Logie Sawmill near Kirriemuir with his family as a youngster, and attended Roundyhill Primary School and Webster's High School.
He worked for the agricultural engineering firm of T. J. Millar, serving his time as a millwright and going on to work his way up to foreman.
When T. L. Millar ceased trading Ray worked for McMultrie blacksmiths in Kellas for a spell before starting his own business, which he ran for five years.
In his spare time he enjoyed motor bike scramble racing and fishing, together with outings in his motor caravan.
At one time he was heavily involved in organising Den concerts to raise funds for the Boys' Brigade in Kirriemuir, and was made an honorary member of the local company for his BB work.
Raymond is survived by his wife Margaret, a daughter Shirley, a step family, 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
