The popular Zippos Circus will raise the curtain in The Myre, Forfar, this weekend when it brings its latest tour to the town.
With a host of new acts and stunts to thrill and enthral audiences, the ‘OMG’ tour brings some of the world’s top circus performers under one Big Top.
Among the line-up is a jaw-dropping performance by Duo Galaxy from Germany, who are visiting the UK for the first time with their ‘wheel of death’.
Stuntman Marcus Köllnal — assisted by his wife Gabbi — performs a variety of flips and tricks on a contraption similar to an oversized hamster wheel which is attached to a beam and spins like a windmill.
Marcus, 46, a fifth generation circus entertainer, also dons stilts to climb outside the wheel’s the metal frame while it is revolving, in an incredible display of agility.
The act has claimed the lives of performers in the past, but Marcus says it is the danger which drives him on.
He said: “It’s a very dangerous act and it’s very special to be in this show. I go outside the wheel, with stilts on, and I’m the first guy to do that. When people see the act they go crazy and some can’t watch it.
“I’m nervous all the time but that’s good because then you don’t lose the respect. I do like the Scottish people and often when the show is finished they come up to me after, kiss me and say I’m stupid for doing it.”
Markus entered the ring for the first time aged just eight years old as a musical clown and when he was 12, he progressed to presenting a team of Shetland ponies; at 15 he took to the air as part of a trapeze act, and at 18 he was presenting a troupe of elephants.
Gabbi also comes from a circus family and the two met when she worked at Markus’s father’s show as part of a flying trapeze troupe, the ‘Flying Muchachos’.
Zippos also features performers from South America and Africa in its cast, including Brazilian stunt team Lucius Troupe and their ‘globe of terror’, which sees up to four motorcyclists whizz around a steel structure at speeds in excess of 60mph.
The circus will be at The Myre from Friday to Sunday and details can be found online at www.zippos.co.uk
