THE ordination and induction of Barbara Ann Sweetin to the charge of Forfar East & Old Parish Church took place in the church a week past Thursday.

Some 400 attended from Forfar, Angus and the west of Scotland.

The worship was conducted by the Rev. James M. Davies, interim minister of Dunnichen, Letham and Kirkden, and the act of ordination led by the Moderator of Angus Presbytery, the Rev. Valerie Allen of Arbroath Old & Abbey.

The Presbytery Clerk, the Rev. Mike Goss of Barry linked with Carnoustie also officiated.

Then the Rev Barbara Ann Sweetin conducted her first Sacrament of Communion.

The service was followed by a supper social at which Dr. Bill Doak from Barbara Ann’s home village of Houston in Renfrewshire spoke of her commitment to church work since her youth, her abilities and readiness to take on this change of career in becoming a minister, and her excitement and anticipation in moving to Forfar and leading the East and Old congregation forward.

The congregation presented Barbara Ann with her robes and a basket of flowers, while her husband Billy received a small gift.

Their immediate family and 120 supporters from their home region attended.

Chairs were then cleared from the centre sanctuary and replaced with food and drink tables for a buffet supper.

The preaching-in service followed on the Sunday morning of that week when the Rev. Barbara Ann attended and the worship was led by the Very Rev. William Hewitt, Greenock, the Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 2009, and a close friend of the new minister.

The post of full-time minister at the East & Old had been vacant since 2007.
