Angus MP Mike Weir attended the lobby by Guide Dogs for the Blind at Westminster Hall this week.

The event brought together MPs with guide dogs and their owners to highlight the difficulties that many still face in getting access to businesses and transport, despite the fact that to deny such access is illegal.

Mike met with Angela Bull and her dog Rambo to discuss the matter and the difficulties that she and her friends have experienced.

Commenting on the event Mike said: “I was very pleased to meet Angela and Rambo, who despite the name is a wonderfully gentle Labrador, to hear about her experiences.

“In Angus we have a very long link to the Guide Dogs for the Blind with their centre in Forfar. We are used not only to those with Guide Dogs but also with seeing the puppies being trained in our towns.

“Guide Dogs, and increasingly other assistance dogs for the deaf and those suffering early onset dementia, for example, play a vital role in allowing independence to their users.

“Whilst most local businesses do follow the law and ensure that guide dogs are welcome, some users do report, however, that they have difficulties with some businesses who still refuse entry or some taxies that will not pick up someone with a dog. As well as being embarrassing this can seriously dent their confidence.

“This is not only completely unacceptable, but also illegal. The campaign highlights the issue and calls for greater enforcement”
