Kirrie showfield will be thronged with fund-raisers, families and fun this weekend when what promises to be the town’s biggest Relay for Life takes place.
The popular event, in aid of Cancer Research UK, is open to all with plenty of entertainment for all ages, from local bands and dancers to exercise classes, ‘It’s a Knockout’, tug o’ war and a silent disco.
For children there will be a treasure hunt, mini highland games, story time tent and kids’ baking demo.
The relay starts at midday on Saturday when a piper will lead the guests of honour - people who have survived cancer - on the first lap.
From then on, team members will take it in turns to walk around the track constantly for the next 24 hours, while the entertainment goes on around them. Local bands High Mileage and The Blend will kick off the music at 12.20pm while Sonnet 65 will play at 9pm to end Saturday’s entertainment. Members of the public are welcome to take a stroll around the track in support at any time before 11pm.
The event also offers a time for reflection, however, and at 10pm there will be the ‘Candle of Hope’ ceremony when candle bags dedicated to someone who is currently dealing with cancer, or to the memory of someone lost to cancer, illuminate the track.
Heather Kelly, committee member, said: ‘You can pick up a candle bag from Paul’s hair salon on Bank St, Kirriemuir. Simply write the name of the person you want to remember on the bag, and decorate it if you wish, then hand it back with your donation.
“We arrange the candle bags around the track in alphabetical order by the capital letter you write on the bottom, so that you can easily find yours. Candle bags will also be available at the relay itself.’
The relay ends at noon on Sunday when survivors will lead again in the final lap. Immediately following this, volunteer vice-chairwoman, Rhona Guild, will set off on her epic 780-mile solo bike ride around all the relay towns in Scotland to raise more money for Cancer Research UK.
