Top competition at fiddle festival

THE 45th annual fiddle festival of Angus Strathspey and Reel Society, held in St. Andrew’s Church, Kirriemuir, at the weekend, was a great success.

“It was a great day, with a wonderful standard of playing,” commented a society spokesperson.

“Local competitor numbers are increasing, which is very pleasing. Thanks go to their teachers for bringing them along.

“Paul Anderson was a very interesting adjudicator, conducting two workshops covering style and technique, particularly in how to bring alive the emotion of a slow air.

“Joan Blue is a very skilful accompanist of vast experience, who can adapt her style to play for anyone very sympathetically.

“And Bill McLaren brought a smooth touch to the evening concert and compered with style. Some wonderful playing from him too.

“The festival attracted competitors from as far afield as Shetland and West Kilbride in Ayrshire. It was wonderful to see them all in Kirrie - a musical treat.”
