MEMBERS of the Fife and Forfar Queen’s Own Yeomanry (QOY) were out and about in the local area last weekend.

As part of a route finding exercise members of the squadron took to the roads in and around Forfar, Glamis, Letham and Kirriemuir on Saturday.

On Sunday, after an early start in Forfar they were en route to Arbroath before heading back down to Cupar in Fife.

Although the squadron are Fife and Forfar Yeomanry they spend most of their time at the centre in Fife instead of here in town.

But there are hopes that in the near future the centre in Castle Street, Forfar can be used more regularly for weeknight and weekend training.

The QOY is the Territorial Army’s only armoured reconnaissance regiment with squadrons in Newcastle, York, Belfast, Ayrshire and Fife.

As a reconnaissance unit, the Fife and Forfar QOY use the Scimiar light tank, which is the vehicle you may have seen out and about recently.

Alongside this they also use the Spartan personnel carrier and highly sophisticated gunsight and surveillance technology.

Those in the squadron have close links with regular armoured reconnaissance regiments and currently provides them with trained Scimitar crewmen reinforcements for operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the world.
