Kirriemuir historian David Orr delighted 50 Forfar Probus Club members recently with an illustrated trip around his favourite Angus castles.
David was a farmer and chartered surveyor with Angus Council who has developed a deep interest in the history of his local area and country. He is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and president of Abertay Historical Society.
Some of the fortified homes he described and pictured were familiar – Glamis, Cortachy, Airlie, Inverquharity, Claypotts and Dudhope, but others – Benshie, Affleck, Balfour, Kelly, Invermark and Forter - were not so well known. He shared the delight of the discovery in 2012 of the ‘Hoard of Glasswell’ near Kirrie and his own home - a treasure trove of Edward I silver pennies uncovered by metal-detector enthusiasts near the site of the castle.
