A survey conducted at two public exhibitions, via a website and door-to-door has shown a majority of respondents in support of the Carrach Wind Farm proposed for a site on the outskirts of Kirriemuir.
Out of the surveys completed 57% either strongly support or support the project compared to 35% who either strongly object or object.
The survey also looked at key issues for local residents and identified visual impact, ecology and construction as the top three concerns.
In terms of benefits the top three identified in the survey were a community fund, diversifying the rural economy and jobs.
Speaking on behalf of the local project partnership Alistair Lang said: “We are very grateful to all those people who came to the exhibitions, visited the website and took time to fill in the door-to-door surveys. We received a thoughtful set of responses from across the wider Kirriemuir area.
“It’s clear that a large majority of local people responding to the survey support the wind farm, but while we are happy with the result, it still points to significant numbers who have concerns, especially regarding visual impact, ecology and construction issues.
“We have appreciated all the feedback received and where possible we are trying to address areas of concern and provide additional information.
“We are confident that the ecological surveys and the plans for construction and restoration of the site are robust, but acknowledge that there are still those who are sceptical who will want to see further detail when our work on the application is finalised.”
The survey was conducted by Realise Renewables on behalf of Carrach Wind Farm LLP between March 23 and May 24. Survey leaflets were sent to all addresses in DD8 5, PH11 8 and DD8 4 postcode areas the week beginning. They could also be completed online at www.carrachwindfarm.co.uk and at two public exhibitions in Kingoldrum and Kirriemuir.
A total of 115 surveys were completed.
When questioned about how strongly they felt about the Carrach Wind Farm project, 35% strongly supported the project; 22% supported the project, 8% had no opinion; 8% objected and 27% strongly objected.
The Carrach Wind Farm, 8km north west of Kirriemuir, is a medium scale proposal comprising 10 turbines each of 84 metres in height producing on average enough electricity to power the equivalent electricity needs of 4,500 homes.
