The legacy and influence of Hospitalfield arts summer school in Arbroath will feature in the final episode of “The Story of Scottish Art”, currently on screen on Wednesday nights.

The climactic episode of this landmark series explores how, over the last 100 years, Scottish art has wrestled as never before with questions of identity and exploded like a visual firecracker of different ideas and styles. Presenter Lachlan Goudie looks at the work of the Hospitalfield arts summer school in the thirties, where artist James Cowie produced many works and also tutored pupils such as Joan Eardley, who would go onto become major names. He also discovers how artists such as William McCance attempted to bring about a ‘Scottish Renaissance’ in the visual arts.

The episode will be screened on October 28 on BBC Two at 9pm.
