Members of a Forfar Highland dance school have had an extra spring in their step after a summer of success, which has boosted their trophy haul.

The Delma Wilson school has spawned a host of champions down the years and its crop of 2013 have added yet more Scottish, British, European and Commonwealth crowns to the roll of honour.

At the recent blue riband Cowal Highland Gathering, Letham 11-year-old Jessica Baillie led the way with Scottish national (confined) and open age group titles, and the Scottish dancer of the event award (see full story on page 15).

Jessica danced her way into the record books when she was triumphant in both the Scottish National competition for homegrown dancers and the following day’s Scottish Championship when the field opens up to international all-comers.

The Dunoon event attracts some 600 Highland Dancers from every corner of the globe, each vying for glory in the Scottish and World championships over three days of energetic competition.

The latest repeat is the first time a dancer has scooped the Cowal double every year from age eight to 11 and Jessica’s success has thrilled her family and her teacher.

Brother and sister Rowan and Olivia Waddell were also Scottish national champs at aged nine and 10 respectively, with Kirriemuir’s Holly Donaldson the 13 years winner.

Alongside them on the presentation platform were Connor Woodcock and Amber Donaldson, third and fourth respectively in the 11 years section, Sophie Brown (fourth in 14 years) and Emma Stewart (fourth in 16 years).

In the British Championship leading up to Cowal, Amber, Holly and Olivia also scooped their age group titles, with Olivia capturing a magnificent historic silver cup as the dancer with most points across the entire Musselburgh-based festival.

School principal Delma said: “Once again my dancers have done the school proud at events all over the country and their success is a deserved reward for the countless hours of hard work they put in, both at class and in their spare time.”

The school is running a Wednesday slot for youngsters thinking of taking up highland dancing - contact Delma on 07841 870022.
