Rehearsals are coming to an end for Tayside Symphony Orchestra’s summer concert, which will take place on Saturday, June 20, in the Reid Hall, Forfar.
The title for this concert is ‘TSO Tribute to Ron’ as Ron Walker has been its conductor for over two decades.
Starting at 7.30pm, with doors opening at 6.45, the first half of the programme consists of Berlioz’ ‘Roman Carnival’ Overture, the Concertino for Clarinet and Andante for Bassoon, both by Weber. After the interval, on offer is the Duet Concertino by Richard Strauss, Tchaikovsky’s Waltz from ‘Eugene Onegin’ and Sibelius’ Finlandia.
Soloist in the Weber Concertino is Sarah Watts. Sarah studied music at the Royal Academy, then did a post-graduate course at the Rotterdam Conservatorium.
She has recently gained a PhD from Keele University, specialises in the bass clarinet and has been a soloist with several well-known orchestras and musical groups. She teaches clarinet at the Northern College of Music and Nottingham University.
Laurence Perkins has the solo part in the Weber Andante. He studied music at the Northern College and is principal bassoonist with Manchester Camerata. Laurence has been a solo performer at various venues, both in Britain and abroad and tutors at the Northern College and York and Nottingham Universities.
Both soloists will feature in Strauss’ Duet Concertino.
Bill McLeod, the TSO Chairman, said: “The players are looking forward very much to honouring Ron, who started TSO in 1993 and has been its leading light since then. It’s impossible to exaggerate how much this gifted conductor has done for music in this area over the past two decades, giving local players the opportunity to be part of a symphony orchestra and audiences the chance to enjoy a wide range of music, both classical and otherwise.
“Speaking of the latter, we hope the orchestra’s support from the Angus area and beyond will turn up in large numbers to thank Ron for his sterling efforts. Andrew McGarva, who is again to take up the baton at this concert due to Ron’s ill health, is pleased with the way rehearsals have gone.
“As usual, if there is sufficient demand, we will run a bus from Montrose/Brechin to Forfar on the evening of the concert. For further details contact John Stevenson on 01674 830250.”
Tickets are on sale from Jarvis Brothers, Castle Street, Forfar; Hoggs, High Street Montrose; any member of the TSO committee; at the door on the evening of the concert.
