Another fascinating insight into days gone by in Kirriemuir has been revealed in a second ‘letter from America’ to the Kirriemuir Heritage Trust.
Last week we reported Trust member Jim McGregor, who lives in the States, sent over an incredible history of his family and their life in Kirrie which is being carefully sifted through by Trust chairman David Orr.
Jim has sent over an incredible collection of letters, photographs and papers collected by his late cousin, Miss Madge McGregor.
David said: “It certainly is a mesmerising collection which includes written memories of the old school attended by Jim’s father and his brother. They both attended St. Mary’s Chapel School, a spin off from St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.”
The letters reveal the history of St Mary’s church, now St Anthony’s, which had been a builder’s store which was bought by St Anthony’s as their building on Bowling Green Road was no longer adequate for the congregation.
Another prize item is a photo of the Irvine’s shop in the High Street. Jim’s grandmother was Elizabeth Mitchell Clark. Her large shop was approximately where Visocchi’s is now.
