The organisers of Cancer Research UK Relay For Life Kirriemuir are on the lookout for Survivors Of Cancer Kirriemuir (SOCKs).
They are inviting them to come forward and to take part in the opening lap of this year’s event, which is being held on August 10 and 11 at the Kirriemuir Show Field.
Gladys Smith, a member of Cancer Research UK Relay For Life Kirriemuir Committee, said: “Cancer Survivors – a term coined by CRUK which covers anyone who has had a diagnosis of cancer and their loved ones – are the guests of honour at every Relay for Life.
“They open the event by walking the first lap surrounded by their family and friends and then, as a thank you, enjoy an afternoon of pampering. This is a truly wonderful event and, as well as providing the opportunity to highlight the importance of the work carried out by Cancer Research UK, it’s also an opportunity to meet others who have been affected by cancer.”
At the 2011 Cancer Research UK Relay For Life Kirriemuir, local mum-of-two Heather Whatley volunteered to help out in the Survivors Tent. This year, Heather will be at the event as a Cancer Survivor.
She said: “I’m a cancer nurse so, on a professional basis, I am only too aware of the importance of the research carried out by Cancer Research UK. Personally, if not for the research that led to the development of the equipment that picked up my cancer, I might not have been diagnosed. Thanks to my early diagnosis, my two girls still have their mum.”
The Kirriemuir committee is hoping everyone in the area who has been affected by cancer will participate - registration for survivors is free. To register as a survivor (or information about Cancer Research UK Relay For Life Kirriemuir or how to register a team) visit www.cancerresearchuk.org/relay, call 0871 641 2602 or call Rhona Guild on 07971 454626.
