ANGUS Talking Newspaper Association, a charitable organisation run solely by volunteers, held its annual general meeting on May 16, in Forfar.
Each month volunteers meet in each of the Angus burghs and produce a CD containing excerpts from the local newspaper and these are distributed to blind and visually impaired people in the area.
This year is a special year for the association as it is exactly 30 years since it was founded in Brechin in 1982, thanks mainly to the efforts of the late Stan Letton.
To mark the occasion, the association has, with the support of Angus Council, organised a competition for Angus primary six and seven pupils to design a new logo for the organisation.
This logo will be used on the CDs sent to visually impaired people, on letter heads and on other material such as a new leaflet which will soon be distributed to public places such as residential homes, doctors surgeries, access offices and libraries.
The winner of the logo competition and the two runners-up will each receive a prize and will be invited to visit the production team at the Damacre Centre in Brechin – and maybe even record a piece for one of the CDs.
As well as these and other arrangements to mark the 30th anniversary, the meeting covered the usual business of an annual general meeting and not for the first time discussed the need to have more volunteers - readers to record the material and technicians to process, duplicate and distribute it.
Anyone who would like to join a reading group or be involved in the technical side can find more details on the association’s website www.angustalkingnews.co.uk or phone 01575 575912.
Office-bearers remained unchanged, with Ian Scott staying on as chairman, Lorna Milne as treasurer, and Liz Mountford as secretary.
The association continues to meet quarterly in each of the Angus burghs in turn.
The next meeting is in Montrose on August 15, then on November 21 in Arbroath.
Listeners, current volunteers and potential volunteers from any area are very welcome to come along to these meetings.
