Local children can expect a special gift under their Christmas tree this year, thanks to the generosity of the people of Forfar and district.

During the last two weeks shoppers picked up special gift cards produced by Forfar and District Rotary Club and purchased presents which will be delivered to vulnerable and deprived children.

Following an appeal in the ‘Dispatch’, the gifts have come rolling in at two collection points - the Forfar Asda store and Astute at Orchardbank.

Paula Elvin, Forfar Rotary’s youth convener, announced details of their ‘gift tree’ scheme which was set up to ensure no local child is left without a gift this Christmas.

Paula said: “There seems to be so much charity out there, especially at Christmas, but I am a firm believer in charity begins at home. If we can’t help people in our own community then there is something far wrong.”

In only two weeks, the public rallied round to answer the plea, ensuring all the children identified, and more, will receive a gift on Thursday.

Paula continued: “I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our local community. Rotary launched this appeal only a few weeks ago and we have managed to secure gifts for all of the children we asked for and many more. Everyone who was involved and donated should feel assured that on Christmas morning they have played their part in making a local child’s Christmas a bit
more special.”
