Following auditions on Sunday for a dog with star quality for Rising Youngstars’ forthcoming production of ‘Annie, The Musical’, a West Highland Terrier from Dundee has been chosen to play the part.

“Alfie is just so cute and incredibly gentle,” said Imogen Walker (13), who will be playing Annie.

She added: “There were so many lovely dogs to choose from for the part of Sandy, Annie’s dog, but he captured my heart!”

Dogs from across the Angus and Tayside area travelled to Northmuir for the auditions, including Billy, a golden retriever from Kirriemuir, Spare, a Collie/Springer from Arbroath, Poppy the Tibetan Spaniel from Dundee and Sandie, a Golden Labrador from Blairgowrie.

“We were delighted with the turnout at the auditions,” said Fiona Retalic, director of Annie, The Musical and founder of Rising Youngstars. “I’d like to thank all the owners who brought along their lovely dogs to the audition and those who sent in audition tapes and videos. I thought casting the orphans in Annie was difficult – but that was nothing compared to choosing the dog to play Sandy.”

Alfie’s owner, Jane McGinlay from Dundee, brought her other Westie, Coupar, to the auditions, and his star quality was also spotted the Rising Youngstars’ production team. In fact, he’s to be Alfie’s understudy! “My boys are going to be stars,” said Jane. “They’re going to need collars with diamonds!”

Annie, The Musical, which has been awarded Event Funding by Angus Council, will be performed at Kirriemuir Town Hall at 7.30 p.m. from Wednesday, June 12, until Friday, June 14, 2013 with a matinee performance only on Saturday, June 15.
