The latest £250 Forfar Roof Truss Company Sponsorship cheque will help purchase a dedicated bench at the Kirriemuir War Memorial.

In their application Southmuir Primary School gave details of some of the work pupils have done to commemorate the fallen named on the memorial.

Last year the whole school, including the nursery, made at least one poppy with the name of a listed sailor, soldier, airman or nurse.

The children discovered some ancestral connections and found information about most of them including where they had lived in Kirriemuir. The pupils discussed how they had probably attended Southmuir school and played in the same places as today’s children do.

To further develop the pupils’ interest they visited the Kirriemuir Museum WWI exhibition, had visits from the Black Watch Museum in Perth with Major Ronnie Proctor and learned songs from WWI.

On November 11 the entire school, nursery, parents and invited guests attended a service at the memorial and each child placed their named poppies and wreaths at the memorial.

Class teacher Joyce Newton said: “We would like to continue this community related connection annually but would also like to place a bench there so visitors can take time to sit, think and admire the view from the memorial. In doing so we would hope to encourage our pupils’ respect for their community and history.”

The bench will cost £635, with a plaque and engraving at around £85 to £100 making the total cost no more than £840.
