Local MSP Nigel Don has taken up a new position at the Scottish Parliament’s by joining the Public Audit Committee (PAC).

The moved from the Rural Affairs, Climate Change and Environment Committee (RACCE) means that Mr Don will now be involved in the consideration of reports from the Auditor General for Scotland (AGS).

The AGS is responsible for the audit of most public bodies such as NHS boards, further education colleges, police and fire services and PAc’s role is to help ensure that public money is spent properly, efficiently and effectively.

Audit Scotland is the agency which carries out auditing work on behalf of the AGS.

Mr Don said: “The Public Audit Committee is a new challenge to me. Whilst anything about auditing inevitably sounds dry and uninspiring it is fundamental to the work of parliament that we scrutinise the way public money is spent. That is not just about making sure the numbers add up but concerns the management approach, policies and processes. Understanding these is probably the biggest challenge.”
